WORTHINGTON — “Summer Survivor” at 4-H Camp is the theme for three camps offered at Shetek Lutheran Ministries on Lake Shetek this summer. Teen Camp for seventh- and eighth-graders is June 20-22; Junior Camp for third- and fourth-graders is June 22-23; Tween Camp for fifth and sixth graders is June 23-25. All youth in these age groups are welcome, and need not be a 4-H member.

Camping programs offered for youths

WORTHINGTON — “Summer Survivor” at 4-H Camp is the theme for three camps offered at Shetek Lutheran Ministries on Lake Shetek this summer.

Teen Camp for seventh- and eighth-graders is June 20-22; Junior Camp for third- and fourth-graders is June 22-23; Tween Camp for fifth and sixth graders is June 23-25. All youth in these age groups are welcome, and need not be a 4-H member.

There will be geocaching at the Teen Camp; a carnival for Junior Camp; and a twilight beach party for Tween Camp. All campers will enjoy canoeing, campfires, cabin-living, crafts and numerous outdoor learning sessions.

Contact the Nobles County Extension Office for more information and registration forms. Registration is due by June 1.

The camps are sponsored by the University of Minnesota Extension, 4-H Youth Development in Cottonwood, Pipestone, Jackson, Redwood, Lincoln, Rock, Lyon, Watonwan, Martin, Yellow Medicine, Nobles and Murray counties.

Verdoorn earns scholarship

WORTHINGTON — Derik Verdoorn, Worthington, has been accepted to Bethany Lutheran College, Mankato, and awarded its Luther Scholarship of $20,000 for a four-year period.

Verdoorn, the son of Wayne Verdoorn, Worthington; and Michelle Fremer, Fulda, is a senior at Worthington High School.

MCC nets third at Math Masters tourney

WORTHINGTON — Fifty area fifth-grade students participated in a Math Masters competition May 1 at Worthington Middle School. Sioux Falls Garfield Challenge Center took first place; Murray County Central earned third.

Rushmore woman earns scholarship

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Sarah Jacobs, Rushmore, was awarded the Rick Hauge Scholarship in Support of the Jackrabbit Guarantee for the 2010-2011 academic year at South Dakota State University.

Jacobs, the daughter of Randy and Joyce Jacobs of Rushmore, is a sophomore majoring in agriculture education at SDSU.

RL-B honored with writing award

ROUND LAKE — For the fourth time this school year, Round Lake-Brewster High School has received Creative Communication’s Writing Achievement Award, which is given to schools whose students’ entries to that contest were of exceptionally high merit. Twenty-seven students were honored for their submissions to the spring 2010 poetry contest and will have their work published in “A Celebration of Poets.”

The students are Zoe Baerenwald, Sierra Bales, Sarah Baumgard, Haylee Behrends, Jacob Clarke, Mara Eichenberger, Mariah Feehan, Joshua David Heidelberger, Alaina Klingenberg, Catelyn LaCour, Hannah Langseth-Berger, Jenessa Ling, Brady Meyer, Benjamin Postma, Caleb Postma, Jasmine Radke, Emma Roos, Madie Roos, Ceilia Schmitz, Megan Schmitz, Halie Spessard, Lauren Stanton, Olivia Stanton, Nick Stude, Jake Walker, Bobby Jo Williams and Laura Williams.

Area students earn awards

VERMILLION, S.D. – Area high school graduates who will attend The University of South Dakota in the fall have received The University’s Coyote Commitment awards.

Presented to academically talented high school graduates, the Coyote Commitment provides renewable, scholarship assistance to incoming students for up to four years of enrollment.

The following students earned awards: Hartley, Iowa: Sara Roseland; Luverne: Brittney Richters; Sheldon, Iowa: Jared Fedders; Worthington: Michael Harberts.
