Council accepts $18,727 public safety grant for ARMER radios

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington City Council authorized a resolution accepting Public Safety Interoperable Communications grant at its meeting Monday.
The Southwest Minnesota Regional Radio Board received $280,904 in funds from the state in June. The funds were divided evenly between the 15 entities on the board; Worthington’s share was $18,727, which requires $4,682 in matching funds.
“The funds can only be used for ARMER-approved mobile or portable radios,” explained Mike Cumiskey, director of public safety.
The board also received PSIC funds in 2009 that were used to purchase ARMER-approved portable radios.
Council members also moved for a first reading of a proposed ordinance that would establish a special service charge for street lighting beginning in October.
In other business, the council on Monday:
- Confirmed filings for the offices of mayor, Alderman-First Ward and Alderman-Second Ward positions will open Aug. 3 and close at 5 p.m. Aug. 17; appointed election judges and designated polling places.
- Authorized an agreement between the city of Worthington and the Office of State Court Administration to aid integration with the Minnesota Court System for the purpose of the Public Safety Departments and Nobles County Sheriff’s Office’s new Records Management System/Computer-Aided Dispatch System.
- Authorized execution of a Safe and Sober Communities grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.
- Issued a special use permit for property at 405 10th St; applicant Mick Eggers will operate an automotive repair business on the property.
- Gave a first reading of an ordinance to a Newport Laboratories request to vacate part of Circle Drive. Adopted a proposed ordinance to rezone property owned by the Worthington Economic Development Authority at the intersection of 27th Street and U.S. 59 from Mobile Home Residential to General Business.
