JACKSON — The annual Race Days and Rhythm of the River celebrations in Jackson will feature a triathlon for grown-ups and the dedication of the new tower at Fort Belmont, as well as a disc golf clinic, a parade and plenty of live music.
“We look forward to peole coming to the community of Jackson to enjoy our weekend celebration,” said Marilyn Reese, executive director of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. “There’s something for everyone, and we have that special hometown quality in everything we do, so it’s relaxing and fun.”
Fort Belmont will open at noon on Sunday for tours, and will offer a special dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. for the fort tower, moved to the new Fort Belmont site from the original replica site in May.
The four center upright posts in the tower, as well as the stairs to the top and some of the logs on the outside were all moved to the fort’s new site, overlooking Interstate 90 on the north side of town. The logs were native timber cut from trees in the Jackson area and sawed at the local sawmill. The posts holding the tower up were first used in the Old Milwaukee Railroad water tank.
After the success of last year’s children’s triathlon, event organizers decided to include a triathlon for adults in the Race Day festivities for 2010. The triathlon, which will include relay teams and individuals 15 and older, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Jackson County Central High School. The 17th annual 5K Road Race will also begin at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.
The children’s triathlon, for ages 5 through 14, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Other popular events are returning from previous years.
Races with major sponsors are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Jackson Speedway, near the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
The parade, featuring more than 80 units, will begin at 3:33 p.m. Saturday. Grand marshals will be members of the Jackson Lions Club, recognizing its 50th anniversary.
Art in the Park will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and will include vendors, artists and crafters. Jerry Spangler of Jackson hopes to demonstrate marble-making to spectators.
