MAHNOMEN - Thirteen rail cars derailed in the city of Mahnomen Monday.
According to a press release from the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office:
Multiple 911 calls were received shortly after 5 p.m. Responding deputies found rail cars off the track north of the Washington Avenue crossing with the remaining lead (southbound) portion of the train blocking the crossing.
At least one car was found to be leaking a large amount of liquid, identified as vegetable oil. No cars were carrying hazardous materials.
Sand was hauled in to form a temporary dike to prevent the oil from flowing into a nearby culvert.
Assisting at the scene were the Mahnomen Fire Department, Waubun Fire Department, Canadian Pacific authorities, Minnesota State Patrol, White Earth Police Department and the Becker County Sheriff’s office.
