UPDATE: Thunderstorm warning, flash flood warnings issued

8:15 p.m.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southern Murray, northern Nobles, southeastern Pipestone and northeastern Rock counties in southwest Minnesota until 8:30 p.m.

8:15 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for southern Murray, northern Nobles, southeastern Pipestone and northeastern Rock counties in southwest Minnesota until 8:30 p.m.

In addition, a flash flood warning has been issued for Pipestone County, northern Cottonwood County and northern Murray county, until 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

4:12 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lyon County, Iowa, and southwest Nobles and southern Rock counties in southwest Minnesota, set to expire at 4:45 p.m.

At 4:09 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing quarter-sized hail. These storms were located along a line extending from 6 miles southwest of Luverne to Inwood and moving east at 35 miles per hour.

The storms will be near Rock Rapids and Doon around 4:25 p.m., Ellsworth around 4:30 p.m. and George around 4:40 p.m.

3:50 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch, set to begin at 1 a.m. Thursday and end Thursday evening, for Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone and Rock counties.

A strong low-pressure system will lift northeast through the area tonight and Thursday, spreading widespread moderate to heavy rain across the area after midnight tonight. The rain will diminish from the southwest late Thursday into Thursday evening, with widespread rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2 inches likely throughout the area. Heavier rainfall amounts of up to 3 inches or more are possible.

These rainfall amounts could create a threat of flash flooding, especially from east central South Dakota into southwest Minnesota where heavy rains have occurred over the past couple of weeks.

3:34 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has canceled its severe thunderstorm warning for Nobles, Rock and Lyon counties.

The storm has weakened below severe limits and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property.

Small hail is still possible with this thunderstorm, however, the National Weather Service cautioned.

3:12 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northwestern Lyon County in Iowa and southwestern Nobles and southern Rock counties in Minnesota, set to expire at 3:45 p.m.

At 3:07 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm 6 miles southeast of Sioux Falls and moving east at 40 miles per hour.

The storm will be near Hills and Beaver Creek around 3:25 p.m., Luverne and Blue Mounds State Park around 3:40 p.m. and Ellsworth around 3:45 p.m. Steen and Magnolia will also be affected by the storm.

3:03 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lyon County and western Osceola County in Iowa, set to expire at 3:45 p.m.

At 3:01, meteorologists were tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing quarter-sized hail, located along a line extending from Larchwood to Fairview to Alcester and moving east at 45 miles per hour.

Severe thunderstorms will be near Rock Rapids around 3:15 p.m., Hull around 3:20 p.m., Sioux Center and George around 3:25 p.m., Boyden around 3:30 p.m., Little Rock around 3:35 p.m. and Sibley and Ashton around 3:40 p.m.

2:34 p.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Lyon County, Iowa, set to expire at 3:15 p.m.

At 2:29 p.m., meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing golf ball-sized hail, located 5 miles southwest of Worthing and moving east at 35 miles per hour.

The storm will be near Inwood and Larchwood around 3 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms produce damaging wind in excess of 60 miles per hour, destructive hail, deadly lightning and very heavy rain. People in affected areas should move to an interior room on the lowest floor. Heavy rains may flood roads very quickly, so drivers should not go into areas where water covers the roads.

11:15 a.m.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 6 p.m. for the following counties:

In Iowa: Dickinson, O'Brien, Osceola and Lyon, as well as Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Ida, Plymouth, Sioux and Woodbury.

In Minnesota: Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone and Rock, as well as Lincoln and Lyon.

In South Dakota: Aurora, Bon Homme, Brookings, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Douglas, Hanson, Hutchinson, Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Sanborn, Turner, Union and Yankton.
