The World War II Memorial

The memorial consists of 56, 17-foot pillars that represent the 48 states of 1945, the District of Columbia, the Alaska and Hawaii territories and Commonwealths of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The memorial consists of 56, 17-foot pillars that represent the 48 states of 1945, the District of Columbia, the Alaska and Hawaii territories and Commonwealths of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, on the site of the former Rainbow Pool.

Congress commissioned the memorial in 1993; it was dedicated May 29, 2004 by President George W. Bush.
