ST. PETER — Luverne and Redwood Valley squared off in the semi-finals of the Section 3A girls’ tennis tournament on Tuesday, with Redwood Valley coming out on top 5-2 in the battle of the Cardinals.
Kathleen Perry recorded a victory for RV at No. 1 singles, defeating Hannah Baartman 6-2, 6-1.
Abby Schmidt won at No. 3 singles for RV, defeating Emily Robinson 6-1, 6-3, and Sophie Humbort won at No. 4 singles, defeating Katie Eeten 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
In doubles, RV’s Morgan Tholkes and Tiffany Raddatz won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles over Cathryn Hartz and Hilary Deragisch, and RV’s Brandi Amberg and Madison THolkes won 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 over Autumn Wenzel and Alyssa Frakes at No. 3 doubles.
For Luverne, Kaitlin Wohnoutka won 6-0, 6-3 in No. 2 singles, and Erin Doherty and Erica Marshall won at No. 2 doubles 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 over Callie Hansen and Julie Anderson.
“Kaitlin continued her strong finish to the year and just went out and beat her opponent,” Luverne head coach Greg Antoine said. “She really moved the ball around and finished off the points when she had the chance.
“Erin and Erica started off really slowly and just fought their way back into a third set. Then they proceeded to really dominate the third set and won 6-0.”
Antoine praised the Redwood Valley players for their solid groundstrokes and ability to put topspin on their forehands, something he said his own team will work on next year.
RV met St. James in the final later in the day, losing by a score of 6-1.
Luverne finished the season with a 16-4 record, 11-3 in dual matches, but still has players entered in the singles and doubles portion of the section tournament to be played in St. Peter on Thursday.
Wohnoutka and Baartman are entered in Thursday’s individual section, and Deragisch and Hartz will team up again in the doubles section tournament, as will Wenzel and Frakes.
