Quick action keeps fire from cornfield

The spark created when a hammer from a stalk chopper hit a rock ignited dry field debris in Elk Township north of Worthington Thursday afternoon, requiring Brewster and Worthington fire departments to respond to the mutual aid call.

The spark created when a hammer from a stalk chopper hit a rock ignited dry field debris in Elk Township north of Worthington Thursday afternoon, requiring Brewster and Worthington fire departments to respond to the mutual aid call. “The rock broke the hammer from the shaft,” said operator Marvin Luinenburg, “and it wasn’t 30 seconds before there was a fire behind me.” The quick action of the departments prevented the fire from igniting an adjoining standing field of corn.
