LUVERNE — A woman who was arrested and charged with a felony after becoming confrontational with deputies called the cops on herself, a man involved in the case claims.
Donita Lynn Richey, 50, also known as Donita Lynn Selwyn, was charged in Rock County with terroristic threats, obstructing the legal process and disorderly conduct after authorities were called to a residence in Hills in reference to a drunk person who would not leave a residence.
In the early morning hours Tuesday, deputies made contact with the homeowner, who said the female, Richey, was the person who had called authorities.
She was drunk, out of control, and refused to leave, he said. She would claim he had hit her, he said, which he denied.
A deputy entered the residence and made contact with the woman, who claimed her name was Richey.
She said she had no identification because it had been stolen, then said the man outside, her fiancé, had hit her.
The deputy saw no signs of a struggle, and observed another person on the couch sleeping.
Richey said the person had not seen or heard anything, but said her fiancé had another girl over that evening.
The deputy observed Richey was intoxicated and was still drinking a high-alcohol-content beer while speaking with him.
The deputy again spoke to the homeowner, who said Richey had been staying with him for several days.
He said she had been drinking heavily and she was not supposed to be drinking. He did not want her to stay, he said, and he requested she leave.
The deputy returned inside and told Richey she needed to leave, offering her a ride to detox, a hotel room paid for by the Salvation Army or a ride to the South Dakota border.
She allegedly refused to leave or accept any of the options the deputy gave her until he ordered her to do so.
She then reportedly became confrontational and aggressive, so he took her into custody.
She was handcuffed and put into the squad car, where she began to scream and yell.
As the deputy drove, he noticed a light in the back of the car and saw Richey attempt to make a phone call, so he stopped the car and confiscated her cell phone.
She then allegedly started yelling that she would kill him and kill Germans.
When Richey began to kick the back of the seat so hard it moved the seat and created a driving hazard, the complaint states, the deputy pulled over and applied leg shackles to stop her actions.
She stopped kicking afterward, but continued to yell and swear for the remainder of the drive.
At the jail, the complaint states, she again became disorderly, kicking the jail door and yelling as she was placed into a cell.
Bail was set Wednesday in the amount of $5,000, with the condition she not use or possess any drugs or alcohol or leave the state without written approval.
As of Wednesday afternoon, she was still in custody in the Nobles County Jail.
