AVOCA – An early morning fire destroyed an Avoca business Saturday.

The Avoca Fire Department responded to a fire call at about 1 a.m. Saturday at Avoca Spray Service, 888 210th Ave., located on the northeast outskirts of the town. Mutual aid was requested from three neighboring departments, Currie, Fulda and Slayton.

According to an eyewitness at the scene, at least three buildings were destroyed by the blaze, reduced to smoldering piles of mangled steel. Members of the Avoca Fire Department remained on the scene to watch for hot spots until about 8 a.m. Saturday.

The state fire marshal had not yet checked out the scene and likely would not get there until Monday.

Avoca Sprayer is owned by Larry Smith of rural Avoca and is one of just a handful of businesses in Avoca.

A more detailed story will appear in Monday’s Daily Globe.
