GRAND MARAIS, Minn. (AP) — All the recent snowfall means plenty of optimism at Minnesota ski resorts, especially as New Year's weekend approaches.

That weekend is typically among the busiest for resorts in northeastern Minnesota. Many say they're expecting good business, although several say the threat of rain might keep some people home.

Dan Baumann owns Golden Eagle Lodge near Grand Marais. He says he's usually at capacity, although he's had some cancellations this year.

He tells Minnesota Public Radio the local trails are packed with 6 to 8 inches of base, and nearly 18 inches of snow in the woods.

At Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail, employee Andy McDonnell says there's about 2 feet of snow. He says with all the recent snowfall, it would take a lot to ruin the trails.
