Column: Fifth graders enjoying Middle School

WORTHINGTON — The weather always seems to be the “hot” topic of conversation, but according to fifth-grade students at Worthington Middle School, there is a lot more than weather to talk about. The fifth-grade students were asked to journal about their viewpoints on being transitioned to the middle school. It was encouraging to read all of their positive comments. Megan Powers’ entry is a typical example of how many students feel:

“What I like about

the Middle School”

My favorite thing about the Middle School is being able to have the Middle School as my school to learn in. I like being able to have my own locker that I can put all of my own stuff in. One of my favorite things about school is band. I like being able to switch for classes. I enjoy being able to go up for seconds at lunch time and being able to sit by whoever I want in the lunchroom. I love that we get to do archery in gym class and listen to cool music at the same time. I like being in the Middle School as a 5th grader because there are a lot of fun activities and challenges that we get to do. My ultimate favorite thing about 5th grade is D.A.R.E! I love all of the art that we do. I love being able to have a lot more freedom.

Along with these many opportunities, the fifth-grade students have also been involved in D.A.R.E. with Officer Fritz and Officer Honius. Some students have had the opportunity to attend the Young Writers Conference in Marshall and participate in the Spelling Bee and Geography Bee at a local level. The Science Fair will be another opportunity in which the students will showcase their talents.

New books were purchased for the Middle School Library to accommodate the interest and level of the fifth-grade students. The fifth grade continues to transition smoothly and feel very welcomed at our new home.
