According to the Minnesota State Patrol, driver Rocio Dominguez, 24, and passenger Olga Diaz Dominguez, 54, both of Worthington, were killed when their westbound 1998 Isuzu Rodeo, an SUV, lost control and skidded across the median, striking an eastbound semi-tanker in the back axle and flipping the large truck onto its side. Disabled in the roadway, the SUV was then hit by another semi-truck traveling east and knocked into the median. The second semi then jack-knifed into the semi-tanker.
IBoth truck drivers, Larry Briles, 51, of Hastings, and John Eich, 55, of Des Moines, Iowa, were treated and released.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:39 a.m., about 5 miles east of Luverne.
The Minnesota State Patrol stated the roads were icy at the time of the crash, which could be a contributing factor.
Initial reports from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) said I-90 would be open by noon, but it was closer to 1 p.m. by the time the vehicles were towed and the debris was cleared. The force of the crash scattered pieces of wreckage in a large area.
