Round Lake alum earns award
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Kirby Baumgard, Staff Engineer in the Aftertreatment Technology Group for John Deere Power Systems, has been named a winner of the SAE International 2011 Forest R. McFarland Award. Baumgard, a 1977 graduate of Round Lake High School, has worked for John Deere since 1995.

Baumgard, a 1977 graduate of Round Lake High School, has worked for John Deere since 1995.
The McFarland award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to the SAE Engineering Meetings Board and the development and dissemination of information through technical meetings, conferences and professional development programs, or for contributions in facilitating or enhancing the interchange of technical information.
Baumgard was recognized for his efforts and leadership in contributions to the EMB Land and Sea Group at the 2011 SAE World Congress in Detroit, Mich., during an April 12 awards ceremony.
An SAE member for more than 30 years, Baumgard has been a session chair for the last eight years.
He has published over 30 papers about controlling diesel engine emissions and reviewed numerous SAE papers.
He is active on the SAE Exhaust Aftertreatment & Emissions Committee.
Baumgard received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Minnesota and his PhD from Michigan Technological University. His area of expertise is in measuring and quantifying diesel exhaust particles.
