WORTHINGTON — Mother’s Day is over, but the Worthington community will continue to honor area mothers with music and prizes at the annual Mother’s Day Celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s School.
“We’d just like to invite everybody and welcome all the mothers … and make sure we bring the community together,” said Pedro Lira, a union representative with UFCW 1161.
Both the United States and Mexico have already celebrated Mother’s Day this year. Mexico’s holiday is May 10 each year, and the United States celebrates it on the second Sunday in May.
Hosting the party the week after the official Mother’s Day celebration enables moms to spend the holiday with their families, but also allows the community to get together to honor moms in public.
The annual party has been a tradition in Worthington for approximately a decade, Lira said, and just as it has for the past few years, it will feature music, games, food, clowns and raffle prizes donated by local businesses.
Lira thanked all local businesses that contributed prizes and food to the celebration.
Moms can bring their children, spouses or friends to the party if they choose, and anyone who would like to sing can take a turn at the microphone and help provide entertainment, though a band will also be available to play.
“Everybody’s invited,” Lira said.
The celebration will either be outdoors, behind St. Mary’s Church, or in the St. Mary’s gym, depending on the weather.
