CHANDLER — To mark 125 years of its existence, Chandler is hosting its own celebration this weekend. A big birthday party such as this only comes around every 25 years, so the city makes sure it has lasting appeal.
The celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday with the Fire Department Relief Association dinner to raise funds for their organization.
Saturday is off to the races bright and early with the first of many contests, the 5k run/walk at 7:30 a.m., followed by Dad’s Belgian Waffles from 8 to 11 a.m.
The crowd-pleaser in any celebration is the parade, which is at 1 p.m. Chandler, home to few, looks to put on a show for many.
“We have over 60 entries and hope to entertain over 1,200 people,” said Gary Stone, mayor of Chandler, “We only hold this celebration every 25 years, so we like to make it count.”
Another highly anticipated event that has its own particular crowd is the model plane air show.
“We signed up a group from Mankato. They put on a good performance, and we’re excited to have them,” said Stone. “They have their own following of people who will also likely show up.”
Included among the 1,200 people who are expected to come to this year’s festival are 600 alumni signed up for the all-school reunion dinner.
The city of Chandler will host dozens of competitions throughout the weekend. Registrations can be found the the town website, www.cityofchandlermn.com.
With 25 years until its next celebration, Chandler promises this festival’s memories will last at least that long.
