United Way of Nobles County attains goal

$140,000 mark is hit for second consecutive year

WORTHINGTON — Once again, the United Way of Nobles County has met its annual goal.

“This is the second year in a row we’ve had a goal of $140,000 and met it,” said Mike Cumiskey, this year’s president of Worthington Area United Way.

The 2010-2011 campaign kicked off Sept. 15. Donation sources varied from businesses to residential campaigns.

“Our biggest donor is the employees from JBS,” Cumiskey said. Donations from JBS employees covered almost half of the campaign.

In addition, the organization raised $,9000 through a November telethon.

“From that ($140,000) we’re able to fund 27 different organizations ranging from Worthington Y, Southwest Minnesota Red Cross, and the boys and girls scouts,” he added.

It took a shorter time period to meet the 2001-2011 goal year. Cumiskey explained that this year, the organization met its target by late April as compared to July of the year before.

Meeting the campaign goal this year allowed United Way of Nobles County to donate $112,000 in benevolence.

“We’d like to be able to give out more next year,” Cumiskey said.

United Way of Nobles County will kick off its 2011-2012 campaign in two months.

“The goal we have in mind is $150,000,” explained Cumiskey, adding that the formal recommendation has yet to be made.
