Iowa plea deal includes a break for girlfriend

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A Burlington man has pleaded guilty to a meth charge after prosecutors promised to drop drug charges facing his girlfriend and lower a charge against him.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — A Burlington man has pleaded guilty to a meth charge after prosecutors promised to drop drug charges facing his girlfriend and lower a charge against him.

The Hawk Eye reports that 51-year-old Kirk Matlock pleaded guilty Wednesday to manufacture of 5 grams or less of methamphetamine in the presence of minors. Matlock was given 15 years in prison.

Two other counts against him are to be dropped. Prosecutors also said they'd dismiss the drug charges against Ashley Gardner, Matlock's girlfriend.

Gardner has pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of a controlled substance and of child endangerment for exposing her three children to meth.

Prosecutors say Matlock produced the meth inside the apartment he shared with Gardner and her children, who ranged from 5 to 10 years old.
