WORTHINGTON — This time of the year is the season for all kinds of sales and from garage sales to Crazy Days, Worthington residents seem to never run out of bargains.
Fulda Area Credit Union is planning a rummage sale, bake sale and silent auction Aug 6 to benefit the Southwest Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross, which serves Rock, Nobles, Jackson, Martin and Murray counties.
“Since everybody here seems to like going to auctions or rummage sales, we decided to to just that,” said Diane Gerdes, branch manager for the Worthington office.
Through Joyce Jacobs, executive director of the Southwest Minnesota chapter, Gerdes learned about the Red Cross and its desperate need for funds — especially during recent natural disasters that struck the nation.
“We can help and we can do something to give back to the community,” Gerdes said.
When people think of Red Cross, Jacobs said, they usually think of the organization in terms of what they see on TV. In reality, the chapter works regularly with people displaced from their homes, especially due to house fires, which are common, she explained.
Proceeds from the fundraiser are designated to stay local.
The credit union is accepting donations of all items ranging from clothes to household appliances in good or working condition. Community members are also welcome to donate baked goods. Donations can be dropped off at the credit union’s Fulda, Worthington and Windom locations.
“We don’t know when the next disaster is going to strike, but when it does, who do people call — the Red Cross,” Gerdes said.
Windom and Fulda branches are currently accepting donations until Friday, while the Worthintgon branch will be ready for donations from Aug. 1 to 5. Donations should be dropped off during regular business hours.
Jacobs said having fundraisers organized by an outside organization is a “blessing” because of the time and effort spent.
“We really want to thank Fulda Area Credit Union for supporting the Red Cross and those who had any hand in making it successful,” she said.
Rain or shine, the event will be from 7 a.m to 5 p.m. at the Worthington office, 1127 Ryan’s Road. Lunch will be available for purchase from Nobles County Corn and Soybean Growers.
