Worthington is already home to the beautiful Freedom Veterans’ Memorial Park, which honors those from across Nobles County who served our nation.

Now, the community is finding a way to help servicemen and women currently serving their country. The city is in the process of becoming a Yellow Ribbon Community, and a steering committee that could comprise as many as 25 members has been formed.

Worthington, mind you, isn’t the only southwest Minnesota city looking to be part of the Yellow Ribbon Communities program. Working with the Military Family Assistance Center in Marshall, Luverne has already been proclaimed a Yellow Ribbon Community. Jackson and Pipestone are among those working on the process, too.

Participating communities work with the Military Family Assistance Center to help meet various needs for military families.

“I think it’s going to be so much easier if there’s a problem,” Al Thiner of Worthington — who has a son in the National Guard — told the Daily Globe last week. “You have these friends in this group that can get stuff taken care of for this family member.”

Thiner has assisted in launching the Yellow Ribbon Community campaign in Worthington. He deserves commendation for his involvement, and we urge city residents and businesses to enlist in the effort.
