Wilmont takes 1-0 lead with 3-2 victory

FAIRMONT — Behind a solid pitching performance, the Wilmont Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-5 series against Fairmont with a 3-2 victory in an amateur baseball playoff game Wednesday night.

FAIRMONT — Behind a solid pitching performance, the Wilmont Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-5 series against Fairmont with a 3-2 victory in an amateur baseball playoff game Wednesday night.

Brian Beuning, a draftee from Luverne, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out seven in a complete-game effort.

The Cardinals struck first, scoring a run in the third.

However, the Martins added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a one-run lead.

But Wilmont scored two decisive runs in the eighth for the one-run victory.

Lucas Henning, Joe Ahrens and Nate Stoll each had two hits in the game for Wilmont.

Henning was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Ahrens was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Stoll was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Jay Scheidt, Justin Saufley and Nick Ahrens each added a single for Wilmont.

The Cardinals (22-7) will host Fairmont in Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
