WORTHINGTON — “Change is good, but diamonds are better” is the motto engraved on a decorative trinket on a shelf at the new location of Dalon Diamonds.
After 22 years of business in Worthington’s Northland Mall, owner Kathy Mullaney, who bought the business in 1996, found a new location for DaLon Diamonds — 1610 McMillan St., formerly home to Empowered Fitness, which recently moved downtown.
“In the last couple of years, we had outgrown our space, but we were waiting for a spot that we were wanting,” Mullaney explained.
The search for an ideal location took several years. “Ideal” for Mullaney meant higher traffic and visibility and a free-standing store so she could set her own store hours.
The moving process was not easy because of heavy safes, but employees managed to transition from the old store within two days, Mullaney said.
Upon its initial opening in 1989, DaLon Diamonds featured a few gifts among its mainstay of jewelry. Limited space led to the elimination of gifts from the product base.
Diamonds aside, the store now — at 3300 square feet — has various trinkets and gifts that can be personalized to commemorate special occasions. Other items include home décor and collectibles. Personalized gifts usually take between one to two weeks, depending on the monogram of choice.
One look at the new store will give away Mullaney’s idea of expanding her business. Shelves of neatly arranged Willow Tree gifts, scented candles and other embellishments take up a good portion on the left of the entrance.
Willow Tree ornaments are hand-carved sculptures symbolizing special meanings.
“If your child went to their first dance or something like that, the Willow Tree (sculptures) come in handy,” Mullaney said.
“Worthington also has less and less areas for unity candles and ring-bearer pillows and other accessories that go with a wedding,” Mullaney said. “We’re working on adding more so we can be full-service — not only in the jewelry department — but with wedding accessories.”
Jewelry, of course, is still a primary feature of the store. Diamonds, colored gemstones, sterling silver, platinum and gold are still the the specialty at DaLon Diamonds.
“We have in-house repairs for things bought here or purchased somewhere else,” Mullaney said. “It is important for people to know that their (jewelry) is staying at the location.”
DaLon Diamonds opened its doors at the new location Saturday, but a grand opening is still pending when the store is completely stocked.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, contact Kathy Mullaney, 372-5510.
