REDWOOD FALLS — Mackenzie Gerber produced a 23-point, 14-rebound double-double Friday night, leading the Worthington Trojans to a season-opening 60-40 victory over the Redwood Valley Cardinals in a Southwest Conference high school girls’ basketball game.
Gerber also had nine steals, as the Trojans forced the Cardinals to turn the ball over 50 times on their way to a 20-point victory.
“Overall, this was a pretty good effort to begin the season,” Worthington head coach Eric Lindner said. “We played pretty well defensively, applying full-court pressure and creating turnovers with lots of hustle. We played really hard, which was certainly nice to see.”
Lydia Kemper scored 14 points for the Trojans (1-0), while Bernadette Boever added six points and eight rebounds.
Worthington led 29-21 at halftime and gradually increased the lead in the second half, as the Trojans held RV to just nine field goals.
“We had a lot of girls contribute, especially defensively and on the boards,” Lindner said. “It was a good way to open the season, and now we turn our focus to Fairmont.”
Worthington will host Fairmont on Tuesday night.
