ADRIAN — It wasn’t pretty, but Adrian’s girls’ basketball team was able to pull out a win Saturday, knocking off Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 59-39 at home. The Dragons shot 38 percent and had 16 turnovers, but took control of the glass, outrebounding R-T-R 42-17 and holding R-T-R to 27 percent shooting to notch the team’s first win of the season.
Austyn Thier led the way for Adrian (1-2), scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Sydne Springman chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds and Kayla Lonneman added nine points and 11 rebounds to help pace the Dragons.
R-T-R (0-2) was led by Jenae Minett (nine points) and Wendy Anderson (eight points).
Adrian travels to Edgerton Thursday and R-T-R hosts Tracy-Milroy Balaton Tuesday.

Spirit Lake 53, JCC 43
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Jackson County Central’s girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday.
Whitney Burmeister had 13 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three blocks and Kaylee Burmeister had nine points, but no one could stop Spirit Lake’s KJ Veldman.
Veldman scored 37 of SL’s 53 points.
Both teams moved to 3-1 on the season.
JCC will host Luverne Friday.

ADRIAN — Kyle Kilgore dropped 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough in the season opener for Adrian’s boys’ basketball team Saturday. The Dragons shot 1 of 12 from beyond the 3-point line and had 17 turnovers. R-T-R (1-1), on the other hand, hit six 3-pointers in the first half to break out to a 45-30 lead at the break.
Brandon Weidert had nine points and five rebounds for Adrian.
Adrian takes on Southwest Christian at home Tuesday.

Wabasso 57, W-WG 54
WESTBROOK — It was tied at 51 with 1:30 remaining in the game in the season opener for both boys’ basketball teams, but Wabasso hit six free throws down the stretch to seal the game Saturday.
Seth Guetter led the way with 18 points and Aaron Brau chipped in 14 to lead Wabasso.
Jacob Comnick had 20 points and eight rebounds for Westbrook-Walnut Grove, while Taylor Lindaman chipped in 13 points and sophomore Alex Knutson had nine points in his first varsity game.
W-WG will host Murray County Central Tuesday.

Luverne 58, SSC 49
OKABENA — Luverne’s boys’ basketball team knocked off Southwest Star Concept Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
Brett Heronimus led the way for Luverne with 12 points, while Matt Overgaard chipped in 11 points.
Jameson Collin had a double-double for SSC, scoring 18 points and bringing down 11 rebounds. Andrew Kramer had eight points and eight rebounds for SSC.
SSC will host Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin Tuesday.

Taylor Christopher had eight points and Jon Harmening had six points and seven boards to lead JCC.
