Grandma Sell’s date pinwheels

1-1/3 cups chopped dates

½ cup sugar

½ cup water

½ cup chopped nuts

2/3 cup shortening

1½ cups brown sugar

2 eggs

2-2/3 cups flour

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. soda

Cook dates, sugar, water and nuts. Set aside to cool. Cream shortening and brown sugar. Beat in eggs. Stir in flour, salt and soda, mix well. Chill dough 2 hours or overnight. Roll out in 2 pieces, spread with filling. Roll up and chill. Slice in ¼-inch slices. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. “These are kinda putzie, but are a special treat,” Pat Sell (Arlo’s wife).
