YOUTH HOCKEY: Squirts go 1-2 over weekend

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Squirt B Hockey team went 1-2 over the past weekend, losing a split squad game 6-5 to Windom Squirt B Yellow and later a split squad game 10-1 to Windom Squirt B Blue, but rebounded on Sunday to defeat the Boji Blizzzard 8-1 at the Worthington Arena.
During Saturday’s first game, Windom started off strongly with three unanswered goals by Jacob Cory, Eli Becker and Dawson Stubbe, before Worthington got on the board in the second period with a goal from Tom Bauman assisted by Davis Moore and Bryce Olsen. The Eagles and Trojans traded the next six goals, with AJ Steen scoring twice and Becker once for Windom, and Ryan Newman twice, assisted by Bauman and Moore, and Olsen once for Worthington.
With four minutes to go in the game, Worthington cut the score to a one goal deficit with a goal by Bauman with an assist from Newman. With time running out in the game, the Trojans were assessed two minor penalties in the last minute but despite the two-player deficit Olsen still managed to nearly score the game-tying goal just prior to the expiration of regular time.
The Trojans outshot the Eagles in this game 27-15. Sam Fellows had nine saves in net for the Trojans.
Later Saturday night a different Trojan lineup faced the Windom Squirt B Blue team and came out on the short end of a 10-1 score.
Newman scored the only goal for the Trojans in this game, while Tylan Porath poured six goals for Windom, along with Kyle Espenson earning a hat trick for the Eagles. Simon Pell scored the other Windom goal. The Eagles outshot the Trojans in this game 35-11. Krew Aljets had 10 saves in goal for Worthington.
On Sunday the Trojans bested the Blizzard 8-1 on the Worthington home ice. Worthington jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first period with a goal from Newman, a shorthanded goal from Kip Jenson assisted by Lance Hibma, Moore assisted by Bauman, Jack Black assisted by Jenson, and an unassisted goal from the point by Hibma, who was playing defense.
Kolby Richter scored the Blizzard’s lone goal.
Additional Worthington goals were from Bauman, Kaden Freking on a breakaway assisted by Lucas Nelson, and Colby Nickel assisted by Moore.
The Trojans out shot the Blizzard 39 to 6 . Fellows had five saves in net for Worthington.
The Worthington squirts are back in action next weekend at the Austin Packer Classic Squirt B tournament.
