WHS Wrestling: Worthington goes 3-1 at the Luverne Invitational

LUVERNE — Worthington’s wrestling team went 3-1 at an eight-team invite in Luverne Saturday.

LUVERNE — Worthington’s wrestling team went 3-1 at an eight-team invite in Luverne Saturday.

The Trojans beat Brandon Valley 39-23, Sheldon-South O’Brien 39-28 and Sioux Falls-Lincoln 34-33, while falling to Blue Earth Area 35-33.

Worthington came out of the invite, learning that every point counts.

“We’re pretty happy with the results,” WHS coach Mark Prunty. “Even when our kids lost, they didn’t give up the big points, saving us valuable points.

“It says that our kids don’t give up. They are learning that every point makes a difference and you can see how much we needed every point Saturday.”

Jared Kinley, Anthony Luft and Matt Poppema each went 4-0 on the day. Kinley had four pins and Luft had three, while Poppema knocked off two ranked wrestlers in his perfect day.

Christian Artiga, Jake Clarke, Zach Kempema and Carson Hagen each went 3-1 on the day, while Blake Shroeder and Brandon Riemersma each went 2-2.

Trojans will take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Thursday at home.

Wabasso/Red Rock Central beat BV 58-12, SF-L 47-19, Sheldon 50-15 and Blue Earth 62-9.

Luverne fell to to BV 49-21, Sheldon 53-24 and SF-L 67-12 and defeated Blue Earth 52-25.

Pipestone went 3-1 on the day, defeating Sheldon 52-23, BV 37-28 and SF-L 35-29, while falling to Blue Earth 38-32.
