AUSTIN — The Minnesota West women’s basketball team finished its first half of the Southern Division season Wednesday with a 55-41 win over Riverland.
The Lady Jays (14-7, 3-3) were led by Alyson Drooger’s 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Brittany Hulstein added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Katey Granstra had eight points and 10 rebounds on the night.
MW went into halftime with a 26-15 (11 point) lead. But they busted the gap wide open early in the second half, establishing a 17-point lead (34-17).
However, the Blue Devils didn’t back off. RCC went on a 12-0 run over the next few minutes to bring the score within five points (34-29).
Luckily for MW, that was as close as its opponent would come.
Hulstein hit a handful of free-throws and a big 3-pointer by Drooger spread the lead to 11 points with under 10 minutes left in the game. The Lady Jays were able to maintain a double-digit lead from that point through the end of the game.
“It was a pretty good game,” MW head coach Mike Fury said. “We played hard and we played with intensity. We let them back in there toward the end, but we came back and were able to stop their momentum. It was a nice win all-around. Our defense played well and we had some good shooters.”
Robin Arjes led RCC with 12 points, while Ashley Lau added eight points.
MW’s next game is Saturday against Minnesota State Community and Technical College-Fergus Falls in Worthington.
And now that the Lady Jays have played each team in the Southern Division they are gearing up for second, and final, match-ups with each rival team.
“We’re halfway through that part of the season and we’re sitting OK,” Fury said. “It’s always good to get a win on the road and this helps us stay in the playoff hunt, which your goal is always to get to the playoffs. We just want to keep playing hard. Hopefully this win will be a good jump start for the second half of Southern Division games.”
