For the last several years, Minnesota West Community and Technical College has sought to renovate and expand the field house on its Worthington campus. There has been a significant holdup, however — the Minnesota Legislature’s failure to include the project in a bonding bill.
This year, there may be hope for an improved field house. Gov. Mark Dayton included $4.6 million for the project as part of his $775 million bonding bill proposal last month, and Minnesota West President Richard Shrubb told the Daily Globe in a subsequent article that he was “pretty optimistic” about getting the money.
Among the details of a bigger better and field house are 10,000 feet of new construction, an expanded gym floor, an additional restroom and a connection to the Worthington Area YMCA. Renovations to 15,000 square feet are also part of the plan; that work would encompass the existing locker room and public restroom facilities.
While recent events in St. Paul suggest agreement on a bonding bill may prove difficult, it’s simply time this project finally receive the go-ahead.
