WHS WRESTLING: Worthington goes 2-0 in triangular vs SCE and RV

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington wrestling team closed out its home season with two dual wins.

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington wrestling team closed out its home season with two dual wins.

The Trojans defeated Sioux City East 51-20 in their first dual of the triangular meet before beating Redwood Valley 61-3 Thursday night.

Sioux City East also defeated Redwood Valley 58-21 to open up the triangular meet.

“We answered them,” WHS head coach Mark Prunty said. “It was nice to see us go out there and individually having the kids taking care of their own matches. And, wow, you look at the scoreboard at the end of the matches and it was some nice wins for us.”

Eight Trojan wrestlers went 2-0 on the night.

Cody Michelson won by forfeit and pinned RV’s Brady Golblirsch at 113 pounds, 145-pounder Matt Poppema won by injury default against SCE and then by forfeit, 182-pounder Carson Hagen won by decision and then by forfeit, 220-pounder Emmanuel Martinez won by decision and then recorded a pin against RV’s Logan Zaske and heavyweight Peter Abraham had a pin against SCE’s Charlie Peterson and won his final match by decision.

Anthony Luft at 120 pounds, 132-pounder Jared Kinley and 138-pounder Jacob Clarke each had two pins on the night.

“I just think everyone’s effort was great,” Kinley said. “No one gave up, we all worked hard not to give up bonus points and everyone wrestled hard all six minutes. That’s amazing. We did really good.”

And for four WHS wrestlers, it was their last meet in front of a home crowd. Kinley, Clarke, Poppema and Brandon Riemersma all participated in their last matches at Worthington High School Thursday night. And all four picked up at least one win on the night — Riemersma won by forfeit in the RV dual.

Clarke and Kinley both had two pins on the night.

The 138-pounder, Clarke, pinned SCE’s Colton Jewett just 1:03 into the match. He finished RV’s Alex Reynolds at the 1:43 mark of that match.

“In my first match I just stood back a couple of seconds just to see what [Jewett] was going to do and how aggressive he was going to be,” Clarke said. “Then I tied up and took a shot and did my cradle from there.”

“In my second match [Reynolds] caught me right away in the beginning. So then I just waited until a little window opening and then took advantage of that and put him away. But I thought we all did really well tonight. We couldn’t have asked for more.”

Kinley also had a good night for the Trojans.

The 132-pounder pinned SCE’s Steven Zellmer in just one minute and managed to pin RV’s Chase Rahe at the 4:23 mark of the match.

Kinley, who will be unable to wrestle in WHS’s final tournament because he has reached the maximum allowed for match count, finished the season going 33-2 individually.

“In the Sioux City East match I pretty much just took him down, turned him around right away and pinned him,” Kinley said. “There wasn’t really much else to it, just basic technique.

“In the Redwood Valley match I think I got seven takedowns. I was just trying to work him out because this is my last regular season match and I wanted to stretch it out a bit. It felt great getting two pins in front of a home crowd. I finished out the season strong, so I can’t be too upset with that.”

Each Trojan won at least one of his two matches in the triangular meet.

WHS’s (11-9) next appearance is at a tournament hosted by Martin County West on Saturday. It is an individual tournament.

However, numerous Trojan wrestlers won’t be competing because they have reached the maximum number of matches allowed per season. Therefore, there will be a plethora of fresh faces on the mats for WHS this weekend.

“We have to sit some kids because of match count issues, but what’s kind of fun is some of our JV wrestlers are going to have a chance to wrestle,” Prunty said. “So they’re really looking forward to that.

“It was a really nice night for us tonight. Now we just need to continue to move forward now and prepare ourselves for the post season.”
