WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Squirt B hockey team went 1-1 last weekend, losing a game 7-6 at Marshall Squirt B on Saturday but rebounding on Sunday to gain a 5-3 win over Windom Squirt Blue.
The Trojans and Tigers were tied 2-2 after the first period, with Lance Hibma scoring a goal (assist Zach Ahrenstorff) and Kip Jenson netting a goal from a pass by Traeton Holt, but after a scoreless second period for Worthington the Marshall team lead 4-2 after the second period.
Marshall took a 5-2 lead mid-way through the third period, but the Trojans mounted a comeback that came up just short.
Kaden Freking started it for Worthington with a goal assisted by Colby Nickel, followed a few minutes later by a goal by Ryan Newman (assist Tom Bauman).
After Marshall scored, the Trojans netted two quick goals on one shift to tie the game up, with Bauman scoring off a pass from Newman and Newman scoring off a pass from Davis Moore.
Marshall managed to score the final goal and held off the Trojans after they pulled goalie Bryce Olsen for a sixth skater over the last minute.
Worthington outshot Marshall 26-14 for the game. Olsen had seven saves in net for Worthington.
Sunday’s game was a close contest. Windom started the scoring with a goal from Alex Espenson, which was answered a few seconds later by Olsen (assist Newman). Newman scored an unassisted goal at the end of the first period to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
Worthington outscored the Eagles 2-1 in the second period, with Olsen and Tylan Porth each scoring unassisted goals, and Jenson getting a goal from a pass by Holt.
After another Porth goal for Windom closed the gap to one goal, Hibma chipped a shot in from the point that sealed the win for the Trojans.
Windom outshot Worthington 37-27 for the game, but Krew Aljets made 34 saves to earn the win for Worthington.
The Worthington Squirts are back in action this weekend with their final home game of the season Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Worthington arena against Fairmont Squirt B, and on the road Saturday at Sleepy Eye to face the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye squirt B team.
