SLAYTON — A premiere screening of the Slayton Lighting Project documentary will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Murray County Central High School in Slayton.
The documentary follows several area businesses as they change their lighting from conventional to energy efficient, with help from EDA grants and Xcel Energy’s One-Stop Efficiency Shop lighting program.
In 2009, the Slayton City Council instructed the city administrator to pursue programs to make the city more energy efficient. A local Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT) was contacted, who connected the city with a lighting consultant with the Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) to promote Xcel’s program.
Twelve businesses on or within two blocks of downtown Slayton retrofitted and replaced inefficient lighting, with Cary Strandjord Productions documenting the process, both before and after the change.
