MAPLETON — The Worthington boys’ basketball team overcame a seven-point halftime deficit by outscoring Maple River by 15 points in the second half to claim a 71-63 non-conference victory Friday night.

“We played much harder in the second half,” Trojan head coach Ron Vorwald said following the contest. “I was really pleased with how the guys responded in the second half.”

WHS (14-5) received a pair of double-doubles from its post players, as Mitch Weg totaled a game-high 34 points and 13 rebounds, while Morgan Traylor added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

“I really felt that Morgan Traylor played his best game of the year,” Vorwald added.

A night after the Trojans dropped 13 3-point shots in a win over Luverne, WHS only managed three perimeter makes against the Eagles, so the strong post play was much needed in the comeback effort.

Lucas Henning made a pair of 3s for WHS and finished with 11 points and added four assists, while Dan Wetering dialed in a triple and added six points. Jon Vorwald and Weg each doled out three assists in the game.

Four players scored in double figures for MR (17-4) with Josiah Breiter, Ryan Sohre and Clark Minks each with 12 points, while Ben Larson added 11 points.

Friday night’s win extends the Trojans’ winning streak to four games and they have has won 11 of their past 13 games following a three-game losing streak in late December.

WHS returns to Southwest Conference play Tuesday when it hosts Jackson County Central.
