PREP WRESTLING: Adrian, W/MLBO move on

WINDOM — Both the Adrian and Windom/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin wrestling teams advanced to the Section 3AA semifinals after winning their quarterfinal duals on Tuesday night.

WINDOM — Both the Adrian and Windom/Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin wrestling teams advanced to the Section 3AA semifinals after winning their quarterfinal duals on Tuesday night.

Adrian defeated Fairmont/Martin County West 53-12 and W/MLBO beat Worthington 51-16 to advance to the next round.

Both the Dragons and the Cobras had byes for the first round of the tournament.

WHS defeated Fulda/Murray County Central 46-25 in the first round, while F/MCW beat Luverne 50-14 to advance to the quarterfinals.

“There’s not one kid that didn’t do what we asked him to do tonight,” W/MLBO head coach Brad Schlomann said. “We moved the roster around a little for the team dual sake, but everyone did their jobs exactly how the coaching staff asked them. In the end, just like Adrian over here, we have set ourselves up for what our ultimate goal was — to get to Friday night and wrestle hard. It’s going to be some really good duals up in Marshall. I honestly have no idea who will win.”

Adrian and W/MLBO will travel to Marshall on Friday to compete in the section semis and potentially the championship dual.

Adrian will take on Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle and W/MLBO will face MAHACA (Morris Area) at 6 p.m. The championship match will be held at 7:30 p.m.

“I’m just looking for good duals that night,” Schlomann said. “I think it’s really tough to call who will proceed. It should be a great night of wrestling. Everytime the section finals are packed and the fans are awesome. I can’t wait for the night, it will be great.”

Adrian got its opponents into a deep hole early. The Dragons led F/MCW 41-0 after eight matches before the Red Bulls got on the board.

In those first eight matches, six were for bonus points.

Jaydan Bullerman (120 pounds), Nate Lynn (138 pounds), Matthew Slater (145 pounds) and Jesse Slater (152 pounds) all recorded pins for the Dragons.

Ryan Elias (106 pounds) started the match off with a tech fall and Ben Mulder’s match at 132 pounds was forfeited.

The Red Bulls were able to get two wins in a row — at 160 and 170 pounds — to make the score 41-6.

But Ben Taracena (182 pounds) got Adrian rolling again with a pin at the 1:57 mark of his match.

Alex Vasquez and Adam Garms each lost their matches for Adrian before Jake Diekmann closed out the match with a forfeit victory to make the final score 53-12.

“I thought we did pretty well,” Adrian head coach Gregg Nelson said. “Fairmont’s a nice team. I thought we had some nice matches and wreslted better than we have for awhile. It’s kind of what we needed. We’re at full strength, or as full strength as we’re going to be, so that’s good. I’m pleased. We wrestled pretty good.”

W/MLBO, on the other hand, found itself down after five matches, 12-10.

Joe Fischenich (106 pounds) opened the dual with a tech fall over WHS’s Hser Eh Pwae. Wyatt Stevens then lost to Anthony Luft to make the score 5-3.

Jared Willaby (120 pounds) came back with a tech fall over Cody Michelson. But Jacob Suess (126 pounds) lost by decision and Luis Ramirez was pinned by Trojan Jared Kinley in the 132-pound weight class to give WHS the 12-10 lead.

However, the Cobras won the next seven matches to secure the victory over Worthington and advance to the semifinals in Marshall.

Five of those seven-consecutive victories were for bonus points, making the score 45-12 entering the final three matches.

Gavin Mutz (145 pounds), Tim Larson (160 pounds), Stuart Blomgren (182 pounds) and Vince Johnson (195 pounds) each recorded pins.

Blake Spinks also recorded a tech fall in the 138-pound weight class.

After losing the 220 pound match, heavyweight Neil Litfin pinned WHS’s Peter Abraham to give W/MLBO the 51-16 victory.

“I really thought we came out and wrestled well,” Schlomann said. “A couple of alternates jumped into the lineup and they both did their jobs. Mutz getting a pin at 145 and Ramirez holding his own against a tough Kinley. We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities and took advantage of them. And there was some really exciting wrestling tonight.”

In the first round of the section tournament, Luverne struggled against F/MCW.

The Cardinals won four matches in that dual.

Two of their wins were for bonus points, with 106-pounder Jose Funes and 138-pounder Eli Dooyema each recording major decisions.

The Trojans won eight matches by bonus points in their victory over F/MCC in the first round of the tournament.

Cody Michelson (113 pounds), Anthony Luft (120 pounds) and Joe Pavelko (182 pounds) all won by pin.

Zach Bruns (145 pounds), Blake Schroeder (170 pounds), Brandon Riemersma (195 pounds) and Emmanuel Martinez (220 pounds) all won by forfeit.

And Matt Poppema (152 pounds) won by major decision.

But it’s Adrian and W/MLBO who will travel to the Section 3AA semifinals in hopes of winning the section championship.

“I just want to see two more of what we did tonight. Two more wins,” Nelson said. “I don’t care how we do it, just get it done. The results can be by one or 10 or 20 points, I don’t care. We just need to keep that same effort and intensity.

“Like I told the kids, they owe me 12 more minutes. Hopefully we get by the first round and into the finals. That’s the way I look at it. We’re putting our whole season into those last 12 minutes.”
