SHERBURN — Worthington’s girls’ basketball team used a big second half to beat Martin County West 71-47 Tuesday.

WHS (15-7) found a way through MCW’s 2-3 zone to outscore the Mavericks by 20 points in the second half, after taking a four-point lead into the break.

“A lot of teams like to run a zone against us to put pressure on our perimeter shooters,” WHS coach Eric Lindner said. “We had a lot of nice inside-out moves to go against their zone.

“Hopefully we can execute our offense like this against the zone more often. Execution leads to success.”

Mackenzie Gerber led the way for the Trojans with 24 points, eight steals, five assists and five steals, while Kristen Andersen chipped in 13 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists and Bernadette Boever added 11 points, five rebounds and five steals and Megan Juber netted 14 points to help pace Worthington.

“This is a team we could see if we win our first playoff game, so it’s a big win for us,” Lindner said.

Worthington will close out the season hosting New Ulm as part of “Senior Night” Thursday.
