Obituary: Alhart Groene

Alhart Eugene Groene, the son of Bernard and Rosamunda Groene, was born on July 3, 1941 in Worthington, MN. He attended grade school at Ewington and graduated from Okabena High School in 1959. On April 11, 1970 he married Carol Schmitz in Worthington.

Following their marriage, Alhart and Carol lived in Worthington and then in 1973 moved to the acreage where they made their home. Alhart was engaged in farming with his dad for 25 years until 1984. Alhart began working at Bedford Industries in 1973 and remained employed at Bedford until the time of his passing, on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at his residence near Worthington.

Alhart was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching college football and the Minnesota Vikings. Some of his main interests included ice fishing, sporting clays, bowling, vegetable gardening, woodworking and spending time outside. Alhart especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Alhart was a member of the Brewster American Legion and active in the community through Scouting and 4-H.

Alhart is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Alan Groene of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Alison Tauer and her husband John of Lakeville, MN, and Adam Groene and his fiancé Tammy Franke of Waconia, MN; two grandchildren, Grant Benjamin Tauer and Addison Grace Groene. Alhart was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at the Grace Lutheran Church in rural Worthington, MN, with Pastor Mark Yackel-Juleen officiating. Casket bearers will be Paul Hohensee, Brian Rogers, Radley Hennings, Ron Kontz, and Dave Tripp. Burial will be in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
