WORTHINGTON — A Southwest Initiative Foundation loan has granted a Worthington couple an opportunity to expand and relocate their business to a new location in town.
Trey and Renae Davis started their small engine repair business in 2008.
“I started part-time until January 2011,” said Trey, the sole mechanic of the business. “I’ve been full-time until now.”
As the name suggests, Davis Small Engine Repair provides complete service of small engine equipment ranging from snowblowers and lawn tractors to skid loaders.
Trey, who worked at Jaycox Implement for 15 years, explained that his interest in fixing machinery began as a child.
“I was always tinkering out in the garage with my grandpa when I was younger,” he explained. “I mowed yards and did service work on my own motors.”
After leaving Jaycox, Trey began a short stint of working for another employer before venturing on his own.
The past year of running Davis Small Engine Repair has been a learning experience for him.
“Everything from the accounts to the mechanics has been,” he said. “It’s very different when you own a business, because paychecks aren’t guaranteed. But I’ve enjoyed it, and I think I’ll have a hard time going back to work for someone else”
While Trey is currently the only mechanic for the business, he is hoping to hire additional help. His wife, Renae, handles the bookkeeping for their store.
As the owner of a small, local business, Trey prides himself in providing quality customer service.
“My door hours are 8 to 5, but you will see my pickup truck still outside the shop at 2 in the morning,” he said. “If a guy needs his equipment bad enough and we talked before hand, I’ll put the extra effort in to get his equipment going.”
Apart from the repair and maintenance work that Trey provides, his store carries a commercial line of lawnmowers and Dolmar-brand power equipment.
Davis Small Engine Repair is located at 1224 Second Ave. Trey can be reached at (605) 553-5044.
