ST. PAUL — District 22 Sen. Doug Magnus announced Monday he will not be seeking re-election in November.
Magnus, R-Slayton, has served in the Minnesota Legislature for 10 years. He represented District 22A in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2003-2010 and was elected to his first term in the Minnesota Senate in 2010.
“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to represent my community at the Capitol,” Magnus said in a Monday news release. “However, I feel that it is time for me to step aside and give another Minnesotan a chance to serve.
“At the end of this term, I will have been in the Legislature for 10 years and, for me, that is enough. It is best for the constituents of southwest Minnesota to send someone to St. Paul who can bring new and innovative ideas to government.”
District 22 includes Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone and Rock counties. A new district map adds Lincoln County and the southern half of Lyon County for the next election.
Magnus, a fourth-generation farmer as well as a Vietnam veteran, is currently the chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Economies Committee. He also serves on the Committees for Capital Investment, Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications and Finance.
Minnesota Senate Majority Leader David Senjem praised Magnus for his service in the news release.
“Senator Magnus has personified the role of citizen-legislator during his service in the Senate and House,” Senjem, R-Rochester, said. “He has been a strong voice for southern Minnesota’s agriculture industry and energy needs while helping to return the state budget to a positive balance. His common sense and unique humor will be missed.”
“The time I have spent in office has been fulfilling. I am honored to have southwest Minnesota for the past 10 years,” Magnus added.
“While I await retirement and the opportunity to spend more time with my family, I look forward to the remainder of my final session. I will keep working hard to find solutions to the important issues that face Minnesota.”
