WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee is looking forward to a very festive St. Patrick’s Day for businesses in the city.
“Saving O’ The Green” is the first St. Patrick’s Day event the committee has planned, according to retail committee chairwoman Amanda Walljasper.
“This is our brand-new promotion,” she said. “March is a really good time because there’s not a whole lot going on.”
The two-fold promotion begins Monday with the Pot of Gold Scavenger Hunt. Twenty participating businesses will carry clues in succession that will lead the winner to the $100 cash prize. The winner must have all 20 clues on hand to be eligible for the prize.
“The whole idea is to get people into businesses that they usually wouldn’t step into,” Walljasper said. “Businesses in town have a wide variety of products.”
In addition to the Pot of Gold winner, the first 50 participants to gather all clues will receive a collection of coupons and vouchers from local businesses.
“It’ll be very helpful if you know the participating businesses,” Walljasper said, adding the list of stores will be available on the Shop Worthington or the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook pages.
The first clue will be released Monday through local media outlets, including the Daily Globe.
“We have a very diverse group of businesses,” Walljasper said, noting participating stores are not limited to those located downtown.
Participating stores are: Ace Hardware, Ax Photo, Brown’s Shoe Fit, Center Sports, Crafty Corner, Davis Typewriter, Etc. & More, JCPenney, Johnson Jewelry, Lit’l Wizards, McCarthy’s Floral, Maurices, Panaderia Mi Tierra Bakery, Picket Fence, Runnings, Schafer’s Health & Gifts, Slumberland Furniture, Shear Expressions, Sterling Drug and The Stag Clothiers.
Maurices’ store manager Susan Barber explained that Maurices will offer a buy-one-get-one-free promotion for some of the store’s merchandise from March 15 until 21 in conjunction with St. Patrick’s Day.
“We’re very excited to be working with the retail committee,” Barber said, explaining this is the first time the store has participated in a city-wide event. “We just became a new chamber member in January.”
All businesses, regardless of chamber memberships, are encouraged to join in the festivities on March 17.
Business owners interested in the March 17 event can obtain promotional signs from the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We just want businesses to offer a sale, decorate and wear green and have some fun with it,” Walljasper said.
Throughout the year, the retail committee organizes various events and promotions to get local businesses to collaborate.
She also stressed the importance of community members buying locally.
“We want people to see Worthington as a place that they can do shopping,” Walljasper said.
