Obituary: Sylvester Schmitz

Sylvester Edward Schmitz, 86, was born on July 1, 1925, in Dundee, MN, the son of Charles and Anna (Becker) Schmitz.

Sylvester Edward Schmitz, 86, was born on July 1, 1925, in Dundee, MN, the son of Charles and Anna (Becker) Schmitz. He was raised in Dundee and attended country school. Sylvester served in the United States Army 307th Infantry Regiment in the Pacific Theater in Okinawa, Japan and the Philippines from September of 1944 to June of 1946. He then returned to Brewster where he farmed until his retirement. Sylvester married Loralie Schneider on April 2, 1956, in Brewster. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Brewster American Legion for many years. He enjoyed auctions and collecting various items, fishing, watching the Minnesota Twins & Vikings, going to the casinos, and driving around in his truck. Sylvester died on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the Sanford Medical Center in Worthington, MN.

Sylvester is survived by his wife, Loralie of Brewster; one daughter, Kay Schmitz of Brewster; one son, Brian (Rose) Schmitz of Brewster; two grandchildren, Zack Schmitz (special friend, Caresse Dalton) and Marty Schmitz; one great grandson, Jaden Schmitz (son of Zack), and one sister, Marie Nelson of Pipestone, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Carl, Ray, and Clarence, and two sisters, Dorothy and Mildred.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brewster, MN, with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Casket bearers will be Tom Nelson, David Nelson, Tom Busch, Duane Schmitz, Larry Schmitz, Derek Schmitz, Aaron Fischer, and Russell Obermoller. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Brewster.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington.
