WORTHINGTON — As spring approaches, we have the opportunity to compete in the Southwest Regional Spelling Bee.

The fifth- and sixth-grade students at the Worthington Middle School were all given a chance to qualify for the Southwest Regional Spelling Bee of 2012. Each student took a written test within our school. The students who attained the top 25 scores were able to move on to the second round, which was also a written test. This round was to determine which 10 students would be able to compete for the third round and qualify for the Regional Spelling Bee.

There was a tie in grade-level scores; therefore we actually had 11 students compete. Out of those 11, Kaitlyn Baustian, Sam Martin, Davis Moore, Xochitl Tobias, Kristy Workman and Anna Meyer (alternate) will be representing Worthington at the Southwest Regional Spelling Bee.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 14 at the Worthington Middle School. Please come and support our spelling bee team as we compete against other schools throughout our region. This event is free and open for the public to attend.

Hollie Hibma is a fifth-grade teacher at Worthington Middle School.
