As others see it: Restart helps DNR for summer

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was scheduled to launch a new online system reserving state camping sites earlier this month.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was scheduled to launch a new online system reserving state camping sites earlier this month.

Unfortunately, the system crashed on its first day earlier this month. So the DNR went back to the drawing board.

The MNR’s camping reservation system will begin taking reservation again at 10 a.m. today via its online site, or by calling 1-866-857-2757.

The most important step in today’s re-launch of the DNR’s reservations system is a staggered reservation schedule.

Reservations for arrivals through April 21 may start today.

Friday through Sunday will be for arrivals through May 12.

Monday will be for arrivals through June 2. For the rest of the schedule, see the DNR’s web site.

The online reservation system has been offline since late December, when the system was shut down for the installation of a new system from a different provider.

The new provider underestimated the opening interest earlier this month and the system was not prepared to handle the opening day’s demand.

The state camping site reservations are an important issue for the many Minnesotans enjoying the outdoors.

The system startup today with the staggered schedule should flow a little better for all involved.
