Letter: Dollars for Scholars program makes a big difference

A college education is the most valuable investment a person can make. The potential for a gratifying, prosperous career, personal development, and the opportunity to make social connections and travel are all benefits of higher education.

A college degree is a worthwhile endeavor for anyone willing to achieve it. But the financial cost of attending college discourages some students with academic ability from even dreaming about the possibility. There are many members of your community who have experienced the same hopes, dreams and fears that today’s students have. These now-successful adults want to help open doors for students who are willing to work hard to earn college degrees. These people know that well-educated individuals are more successful and productive in all fields of employment and contribute in many ways to quality life in their communities.

Dollars for Scholars of Worthington exists solely for the purpose helping to make the dream of a college education come true for Worthington High School graduates. Many volunteer hours and contributions have helped make scholarships possible since the early 1980s.

All college-bound seniors are eligible to apply for a scholarship through Dollars for Scholars. Actual awards depend on a student’s academic achievement, demonstrated leadership in the school or community and evidence of service to others.

Awards will be presented at a ceremony at the high school on May 9. The featured speaker will be Mike Patrick, former WHS student and a generous contributor to Dollars for Scholars of Worthington.
