WORTHINGTON — Worthington School District 518 teachers, staff and school board members gathered at the high school Monday afternoon to honor Roxanne Kremer, who was named the 2012 Teacher of the Year.
Kremer, a kindergarten teacher at Prairie Elementary, has more than 20 years of teaching experience. She joined District 518 in 1993, when she first taught a multi-age group of fourth-through sixth-graders. For the past 11 years, she has worked with kindergarten students.
“I’ve been asked many times what my favorite grade to teach is,” Kremer said in her speech. “Whatever grade or subject area you teach, our job is to hook children into the joy and excitement to learn and feel successful.”
Kremer attended Concordia College, where she received her teaching degree in 1978. In 1981, she earned her kindergarten endorsement from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She later continued her education and received her master’s degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2000.
Her love for teaching was inspired by her great-grand aunt, she said.
“As a little girl, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she added. “Teaching is a wonderful profession because there are a lot of intrinsic rewards.”
Fellow kindergarten teacher and Teacher of the Year nominee Sue Hagen, who introduced Kremer, described her as “a very important part of our kindergarten team.”
“She goes above and beyond meeting the needs of all learners in her classroom,” Hagen said. “Whether you know her as Mrs. Kremer, Roxanne, or Roxy, you’ve got to love her.”
As she presented the award to Kremer, Hagen brought out a bag of kindergarten essentials for the occasion that evoked laughter among attendees — a sticker, a crown and a special pencil.
“This is an overwhelming award — to be nominated by your peers,” Kremer said.
Like most teachers, she said, her favorite teaching moment is the “aha moment.”
She closed her speech by exclaiming how proud she is to be part the District 518 team.
The 2012 Teacher of the Year recognition is awarded by Education Minnesota Worthington. Also nominated for the award was sixth-grade teacher Rich Besel.
Kremer will represent Worthington for Education Minnesota Teacher of the Year award at state level.
