LUVERNE — Aaron Pavelko’s first varsity at-bat won the game for Worthington Tuesday night against Luverne.
With no score entering the seventh inning, Pavelko came up to bat with two outs and Tyler Verdoorn and Tanner Rogers on second and third base.
Pavelko hit a single to right field that scored both runners, making the score 2-0. Pavelko advanced to third base on a throwing error at the plate in an attempt to get Rogers out. Pavelko then scored on another throwing error when Luverne’s catcher overthrew to third base, making the score 3-0.
The Trojans held the Cardinals in the bottom of the inning, taking the ballgame and improving to 3-0 on the season.
“It was a hard-fought game,” WHS coach Stacy Sauerbrei said. “Aaron came up in a real stressful situation, but came through and he was so excited about that. He’s a real great kid who is unselfish and knows his role on the team. It was a great day for him.”
The winning pitcher was Lucas Henning, who tossed his second no-hitter of the season.
He finished the game with four strikeouts, four walks and no hits.
Reed Skattum pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Cardinals (3-1), allowing three runs, three strikeouts and one walk.
“Lucas has made himself into a very good player,” Sauerbrei said. “He didn’t have the big number of strikeouts like he usually does, but that’s all right. He’s confidence in his defense and has real strong command of his pitches.”
Worthington’s next game is against Fairmont on Friday. Luverne plays Southwestern United on Monday.
