CLARA CITY — The Worthington boys’ tennis team defeated MACCRAY 7-0 Tuesday to improve its record to 4-1 on the season.

At No. 1 singles, Dan Wetering defeated Nick Kellen 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Lance Homan defeated BrandonWieberdink 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Travis Vuong defeated Andrew DuHoux 7-6, 6-1. And at No. 4 singles A.J. Hayenga defeated Conner Hagemeyer 6-4, 6-3.

“Travis was impressive today,” WHS coach Mike Marquardt said. “He won the first set in the tiebreaker after starting the match down 4-1. He only played in one singles match last season and only one this season, so he’s more of a doubles guy usually. But I am very happy and proud of how he did today. He worked his own way out of trouble and his hard work is definitely paying off.”

At No. 1 doubles, Jonah Oberloh and Matt Sorensen defeated Austin Stager and Nate Eisenmenger 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Carter Lindner and Andrew Johnson defeated Jae Lim and Niki Cheewart 6-1, 6-0. And at No. 3 doubles, Dillon Pedersen and Ben Doeden defeated Chris Sietsema and Chris Treus 6-0, 6-0.

“We made some little changes in the lineup and made some new combos today and I think that paid off,” Marquardt said. “I was most impressed with how patient we were. The kids set up their shots well rather than rushing through to get the point. Everyone played well today.”

Nick Newman and Ben Christensen won their JV doubles match 8-1, while Kody Honius and Issac Houselog won their JV match 8-0.

Worthington’s next match is at Pipestone Area on Thursday.
