ST. CLOUD — Minnesota West mens’ baseball team was swept in the opening round of the playoffs Friday by St. Cloud Tech. The Bluejays may have been bounced out of posteason play, but they gave the No. 8 team in the nation everything they could handle, falling 5-1 and 5-2.

Adam Munkel pitched six innings in Game 1, striking out five, walking two and giving up two earned runs. Eric Wieneke had the lone RBI for the Bluejays.

In Game 2, Wieneke pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs, striking out one and walking none and Alex Petersen was 2-for-2.

“We had great pitching today,” MW coach Jeff Linder said. “They have four hitters batting above .400, so they can hit.

“We played some of the best ball we’ve played all season. It just turned out we had too many errors. We made a game of it, but those errors were costly.”

The Bluejays finish the season 2-27, but with seven extra-inning games, the season could have had a much different outcome with a few cracks of the bat.

“Our record does not show how well we played,” Linder said. “We played with some of the best teams, but errors seemed to always hurt us.

“I will give it to the guys; they always came to play. They kept playing hard and sticking together and that’s all you can ask. They battled until the end and that shows their character.
