HERON LAKE — The First Nite League’s Heron Lake Lakers dropped the season-opening amateur baseball game to the Gopher League’s Milroy Irish in a 6-2 decision in a non-league contest Sunday afternoon.
The Irish pounded out 13 hits, while five pitchers combined to two-hit the Lakers in the victory.
Daniel Frank earned the win for Milroy, pitching a scoreless sixth in relief of starter Isaac Dolan and reliever Cody Mather, while Luke Walling tossed a scoreless seventh and Tyler Peterson closed out the game to record a save over the final two innings.
Ben Scheevel was charged with the loss in relief of Ethan Duffy, who turned in a stellar start by allowing one run on six hits, two walks and a hit batter, while striking out six. Alex Meyer pitched the ninth for the hosts, striking out all three batters he faced.
“Duffy turned in a great start for us,” HL coach Chad Knutson said. “He pitched the ball well by limiting free passes and scattering six hits with good command in his outing.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to get much going at the plate, while the Irish really hit the ball well.”
Milroy turned the contest in its favor in the seventh by scoring five runs on five hits to take a 6-2 lead after cutting HL’s 2-0 lead in half with a run in the sixth.
Dominic Dolan, Derek Riley and Isaac Dolan each were 3-for-5 at the plate for Milroy, while Anthony Dolan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Peterson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Ike Rogers led HL at the plate with a hit and an RBI, while Tony Jorgensen had the other hit, Mark Fest produced an RBI and Matt Franks and Meyer each scored a run.
HL showed patience at the plate by collecting nine walks, but was unable to capitalize on most of the free passes, stranding 11 runners on base, including leaving the bases full in both the fourth and eight innings.
The Irish (1-0) travel to Granite Falls Friday for a non-league game, while the Lakers (0-1) host Fairmont in their league opener Sunday at 2 p.m.
