FAIRMONT — The Worthington boys’ and girls’ golf teams competed in the Fairmont Invitational Saturday.

The Trojan girls (422 points) finished eighth among 11 teams on 18 holes, while the boys finished eighth among 12 teams, shooting nine holes due to weather conditions.

“We played in some miserable stuff,” WHS coach Ron Wood said. “The weather was not the best, but I was pleased with our performances.

“Everyone was playing in the same conditions, so the weather was no excuse.”

Morgan Harberts led the way for the Trojan girls, shooting a 104, while Mariah Haffield chipped in a 105, McKenzie Hurley added a 106 and Genna Putnam rounded out the scoring for the Trojans with a 107. Tyree Murray added a 115 and Kia Veen scored a 136 for Worthington.

“It was the same three holes for every girl that was a disaster,” Wood said. “On holes 10, 11 and 12 we shot 45 over par and that really hurt.

“For some reason those holes were a disaster for us. You can see how just one little sequence can really hurt you.”

Jackson County Central’s Kaylee Benson earned medalist honors, shooting a 79, and Windom took home the championship with a 371.

On nine holes, the Trojan boys shot a 175. Alex Kremer led the way with a 41, Seth Meier and Will Mulder added 42s and Zach Heidebrink chipped in a 50, as the top four scorers for the Trojans. Jacob Weg shot a 52 and Caleb Kill shot a 54 for Worthington.

Marshall won the invite with a 156.

“I was very pleased with the three scores in the 40s,” Wood said. “If we had one more score down there we would have finished in the middle of the pack.

“Without having another low 40s it makes it difficult to compete. I was pleased with both teams. I think we’re in good shape for the home stretch.”

Worthington will play at Adrian today.
