WORTHINGTON — Worthington’s golf teams split with Fairmont Thursday at Prairie View Golf Links, as the Trojan girls lost by one stroke, 192-193, and the boys cruised 166-216.
Kate Lesnar led the way for Worthington girls, earning low medalist honors with a 38, while Mariah Haffield shot a 48, Morgan Harberts added a 51 and McKenzie Hurley added a 52 for the Trojans. Genna Putnam shot a 59 on the day and Tyree Murray added a 60 for Worthington.
“All the girls moaned when they found out the score,” WHS coach Ron Wood said. “When they heard the scores they thought about all the puts they threw away and the minor mistakes.
“You can always find a stroke in any player’s game when you lose by one stroke. I was pleased because we were just two or three strokes over our average, but we wanted to win. It’s a tough loss.”
The Trojan boys had some better luck, as Alex Kremer shot a 37, Seth Meier had a 41 on the day, Will Mulder hit a 43 and Jacob Weg added a 45 for the Trojans. Jacob Woll and Zach Heidebrink each had a 48 for the Trojans.
“We are getting closer to where I would consider us able to compete with anybody,” Wood said. “I’m getting to feel comfortable with knowing five of my six golfers will shoot in the 38 to 43 range.
“We think we can compete with any of the teams at our section.”
Worthington will compete at Redwood Valley today.
